The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies -IFRC- says it has raised over one point five (1.5) million Swiss francs for its humanitarian activities in Zambia.
Head of IFRC’s Southern Africa cluster office Michael Charles says the funds were raised after the Societies launched an international appeal for three point five (3.5) million Swiss francs to compliment government’s efforts in providing food aid to some affected parts of the country.
He was speaking at the Zambian Chancery in Pretoria, South Africa when he paid a courtesy call on Zambia’s High Commissioner to that country Major General Jackson Miti.
Dr. Charles said climate variability that Zambia was currently experiencing was affecting food security in the country.
He mentioned that his organization would work closely with government and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit- DMMU- to improve food security in the affected communities.
Dr. Charles said beneficiaries would have a choice to either get cash grants or receive relief depending on their preferences.
He said that IFRC would continue complimenting government’s efforts through provision of humanitarian aid to improve food security in the country.
Dr Charles further expressed gratitude to the Zambian government for continued commitment and support given to his organisations in their humanitarian initiatives.
And Major General Miti appreciated the assistance that the organization was rendering to Zambia.
He mentioned that government has continued distributing relief food to the affected communities despite facing difficulties due to flooding in some parts of the country.
